Student Society Future Leader Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.
The motion against George Abaraonye achieved the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The controversy erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The president-elect is also reported to have written in a messaging group with other members seeming to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.
His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The letter criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".
The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the society in May.
