{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation happened on the third lap when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is currently investigating the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was advised that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, track officials were notified and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was shown in that area"
"We are still investigating what occurred subsequent to that time"
