The UK government has added eleven further nations to its official advisory list concerning the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from tainted spirits.

The revised travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.

Just recently, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after several high-profile incidents like the tragic loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that even tiny quantities of methanol can lead to vision loss or death within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.

But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.

Authorities' Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or free shots," the official advised.

"If something seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than typical or sight issues – contact a doctor immediately."

The full roster of nations identified as carrying a threat of methanol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
